Can I become an au pair?
Are you looking for an exciting international experience but unsure if you qualify to become an au pair? While each country has specific requirements for participants, there are common standards that apply to most au pair programs worldwide.
You can become an au pair if you meet the following criteria:
Aged between 17 and 30 years old
Proficient in English or the host country's language
Enjoy working with children
Unmarried with no children of your own
Minimum high school diploma
In good health with no chronic illnesses
No criminal record
Willing to spend 1 year or longer abroad
Let's examine each requirement in detail:
Age Requirements
You must be at least 17 years old and no older than 30 to apply for the program. Be sure to check the specific age requirements for each country.
Language Proficiency
You need to be able to communicate daily with your host family. Unless otherwise specified, general proficiency in English or the host country's official language is usually sufficient. The au pair program is designed to help you practice a foreign language, so don't worry if you're not completely fluent yet! If you require a visa for the au pair program, you may need to provide language certification to demonstrate your knowledge of the target language.
You can also improve your language skills by taking courses in your host country. In some countries, language courses are mandatory.
Personal Status Requirements
To participate in an au pair program, you must not have children of your own. This is also a crucial requirement for obtaining an au pair visa. In many countries, you must also be unmarried.
Educational Background
You need at minimum a high school diploma (requirements may vary by country). Some host families may request additional qualifications or documentation proving your experience in childcare.
Financial Considerations
Unless you make alternative arrangements with your prospective host family, you must be able to cover your round-trip travel expenses. While we encourage host families to support their au pairs with travel costs, this is not mandatory and depends entirely on the family's decision.
Visa Requirements (if applicable)
You must meet the requirements of your host country's embassy to obtain an au pair visa. If you're interested in the U.S. au pair program, check the J-1 visa requirements. Also review information about working holiday visas, which are available to au pairs in several countries.
Additional Requirements
You must be in good health and a non-smoker. While smoking isn't an official disqualifier, non-smoking au pairs have significantly better chances of finding host families.
