Au Pair in China | The Magical Oriental Nation! Huiling has been accompanying and growing with families for eight years.
During this time, we have met many lovely au pairs. We have collected stories from these outstanding au pairs about their experiences in China—cultural encounters, family life, and friendships—to showcase the diverse and exciting lives of au pairs in China.
Today, we bring you the story of a kind and warm-hearted Mexican brother, Ricardo, and his journey in China.

Mexico Ricardo
I’ve always been curious about China. After living here for several months and interacting with Chinese people every day, I’ve grown to really like them—everyone is so friendly. No matter where I go or who I meet, even if I encounter problems, there’s always someone willing to help me out.
I love exploring new places. China has many unexpected little spots—you can’t tell what they are from a distance, but once you get closer, you discover a whole new world! It’s such a fun process to stumble upon these interesting places and explore them.

China is vast and full of surprises, with so much waiting to be discovered. That’s one of the joys of being in a foreign country!
Coming to China felt like being an ancient traveler leaving their familiar homeland to explore the legendary "mysterious Eastern country" from books. No one knows exactly how to get there, what they’ll encounter, or how different it will be.

For me, coming to China was exactly like that—a completely new country where everything was unfamiliar yet deeply fascinating.
First, the language barrier was a huge challenge. Even now, I still struggle to fully understand Chinese, though I get to practice every day simply because I’m immersed in the environment. The language difference was a major shock.
Then there’s the food culture. For us, chopsticks—those two long, thin sticks—are really tricky to master! And the variety of flavors and dishes is incredible. Chinese cuisine is so diverse—almost every meal features different dishes.

Even drinks are different. In my country, most people drink coffee, but I’ve noticed that while many Chinese people also enjoy coffee, tea is far more popular. Of course, I love tea too!
From food to language to everyday life, everything has been a brand-new experience!
Chinese children are incredibly skilled at a young age, partly because, in addition to regular school, they spend a lot of time attending various extracurricular classes and tutoring.
While they have many additional lessons, I think it’s great that they have access to more educational opportunities and resources, allowing them to learn so much.

The kids in my host family are very smart. We’ve read many books together about history, nature, and famous world leaders.
Their ability to learn is impressive—they’re really cool! As I mentioned, they take different kinds of classes and gain a lot of knowledge.
I love spending time with them, not just in academic learning but also through fun games and activities that help them relax while learning. We get along very well—I’m like their big brother, haha!
Chinese children are hardworking and intelligent, and their achievements are closely tied to their efforts.
My host family has been very kind to me, and their English is excellent, so communication hasn’t been a problem. My host parents are very warm-hearted and good people, so we’ve had no conflicts—just harmonious and happy interactions.
But even if misunderstandings arise, I believe that as long as we communicate openly, we can understand each other and resolve any issues. Cultural differences don’t hinder our communication, and if problems come up, we discuss them immediately instead of letting them build up.
Communication is key, and addressing issues promptly ensures that both the family and the au pair feel understood.
Absolutely! I will definitely return to China. There’s so much here that I love and want to learn. This experience has given me so much, though next time, I’ll make sure to brush up on my Chinese first—the language barrier was tough! I’ll find a way to come back!
